Barnes has focused on developing girls rugby in the past few years, including squads from U12 to U15 girls squads that train on a Sunday. Some of the girls have progressed through the mixed Mini rugby age groups and graduated into the girls Juniors squad. Some girls are new to rugby altogether, enjoying sporting activity with their mates on a Sunday and making new friends in the process.
Former Barnes Ladies captain, Ashley Brandon, runs the training and organises an annual Schools Girls Rugby Festival under floodlights to encourage more primary and secondary school girls to take up the sport at Barnes. We encourage all age groups from Under 11 to join in on a Sunday if they want to play rugby with girls only, since contact rugby commences at Under 9 and it gets a little more physical in the mixed squads in Under 10+.
The girls play occasional fixtures on Sundays against local teams and participate from time-to-time in Surrey RFU organised ‘pitch-up-and-play’ events. With two senior Ladies teams, Barnes Rugby provides a clear pathway for continued rugby achievement and camaraderie for many years to come. Often times the Girls support the ladies teams on match day to get exposure to the senior game.
